Established in 2018 by the Shandong provincial government, the Marine Ecological Civilization Comprehensive Experimental Area of Changdao encompasses the Changdao archipelago, which consists of 151 islands situated between the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea. The area is home to approximately 43,000 residents across 10 inhabited islands. The initiative aims to promote green, low-carbon, and high-quality development, focusing on ecological conservation and sustainable economic growth. Efforts include the restoration of 1,200 hectares of nearshore aquaculture, the cleanup of 89 kilometers of coastline, and the implementation of low-carbon facilities such as central heating stations and new energy-powered buses. These measures have led to significant ecological improvements, including the return of various marine species and increased tourism, with 1.67 million visitors recorded as of August 2023.
